Vic: Nurses' assistant pleads guilty to sex attacks

MELBOURNE, Feb 12 AAP - A 47-year-old former nurses' assistant today pleaded guiltyto sex attacks on three elderly patients under his care in a Melbourne nursing home.

Michael Peter Sedgman, of The Pines, also pleaded guilty to one count of theft relatingto clothing and a pair of prosthetic breasts belonging to Darvall Lodge, the Freemasons'aged care facility where he worked.

During a brief hearing at the County Court, Sedgman broke down and wept as he enteredguilty pleas to the three counts of indecent assault on the women, all in their nineties,between September 2000 and July 2001 in the Noble Park nursing home.

The women suffered from dementia and two have since died.

The prosecution case relied primarily on evidence from a fellow staff member who witnessedthe attacks.

Sedgman also admitted to a prior criminal history including an indecent assault 20years ago, theft, and an offensive behaviour charge ten years ago.

Lawyer Justin Hannebery will make a plea of leniency for Sedgman on March 4, followinga psychological assessment of his client, before Judge Frank Walsh.

Until then the former nurses' assistant remains on bail.
