NT to roll out 3G data service Tuesday

Nepal, May 2 -- Nepal Telecom (NT) is all set to start offering high speed internet service through its new product-3G data service from Tuesday. The service will be available in Kathmandu, Banepa and Pokhara-the areas having NT's 3G coverage.

Through this new service, NT will provide internet service having a maximum speed of 3.4 mbps. The charge for the data use has been fixed at 15 paisa per 100kb.

"We will start distributing 3G data card for customers needing high speed internet facility for their laptops or desktops," said Surendra Prasad Thike, deputy managing director and spokesperson for NT. He said the card will cost Rs 300 in which subscribers will get a balance of Rs 100. However, subscribers have to buy USB adopters from the market.

According to him, subscribers will be able to recharge their account easily through recharge cards available in the market. There is no limit for data use-the more one uses, the more s/he has to pay.

For customers of Kathmandu and Banepa, NT will distribute the cards from NT's Tripureshwor and Pulchowk offices, respectively. It also said it will expand the service in other parts of the country soon.

Although NT was the first to introduce 3G service in South Asia, it has not been able to attract users as anticipated in 3G mobile service. It has capacity to distribute the service to more than 100,000 subscribers, but so far the 3G mobile services have been subscribed by an estimated 25,000 subscribers only. Recently, with a view to take the service to newer areas, the company started 3G mobile service test in Lumbini.
