Fed: Crean still waiting for Beazley's call
CANBERRA, April 25 AAP - Embattled Labor Leader Simon Crean is still waiting for aphone call from his predecessor Kim Beazley about his leadership ambitions.
The pair became embroiled in a leadership stoush after Mr Beazley refused to rule outa challenge and Mr Crean accused him of disloyalty.
Mr Crean said today he had expected Mr Beazley to return his call.
"You would have thought it was the normal thing to do, especially when I put the callinto him early," Mr Crean told Sydney radio 2UE.
But despite the significant damage the leadership woes were causing the party, Mr Creanwas confident he would lead Labor if an early election was called and that the party wouldwin.
"Yes, I will fight tooth and nail for a better deal in this country because I thinkfamilies are doing it tough," Mr Crean said.
"Regardless of the diversions of the moment, I am determined to map out an alternativeset of options, a better deal for those families."
Mr Crean did not wish to dwell on his leadership problems on Anzac Day, saying it wasa day for commemoration and remembrance.
But he said he was encouraged by comments urging him to stick with the job when heattended the dawn service in Melbourne.
"A lot of the comments that came from people at the dawn service to me were urgingme to stick with it and stare down these current circumstances and they remarked aboutthat quality of loyalty themselves today and how important it is," he said.
